how to introduce a new cat to their siblings

Whether you have decided to add a new addition to your family or you’re considering it, welcoming a new cat into a home with existing cats and dogs can be overwhelming for everyone.

Here are a few of our best tips to help your new cat adjust to their new siblings.

Start with a Barrier

When introducing your new cat to other household cats, the first step is to do introductions with a barrier. The goal is for the animals to see each other without directly interacting. The new cat should be kept in their safe space in the meantime as introductions are done gradually.

Slow and Steady

Once you’re introduced the cats with a barrier for a couple days, you can attempt a face-to-face meeting. Make sure you have a big towel or blanket on-hand in case things get tense to provide a temporary barrier. Always make sure the cats have a separate space to retreat if they need to. Be sure to stop the interaction when either cat begins to show signs of stress.

Hard to Predict

Slowly increase the amount of interaction until the cats feel comfortable with each other and are not showing signs of stress. Some cats will bond immediately and become the best of friends, while other may just coexist peacefully. This may take time so its important to be patient during this transition.

Be Ready

When introducing a new cat to a household it is important that you have enough resources. Make sure you have at least one litter box per cat, food and water bowls in separate areas in case one cat decides to guard the resources, and of course a safe space for the new cat. Be sure to include toys, blankets and cat trees in multiple spaces.

Now for the Dogs

When it comes to introducing a new cat with a dog, it is important to be extra careful, especially with larger dogs. Follow the same guidelines for introducing cats. You can also put the dog on a leash so there is additional control and to ensure the animals will not harm one another.
