tips for giving medication
While giving a cat medication may seem like a daunting task, it can actually be quite easy. While you should always follow your veterinarian's directions, here are a few tips that may be able to help!
For Pills
The most important tip is to remain calm and be prepared. Make sure you have all the supplies you need before you begin.
Many cats will take pills in a small amount of wet food. Simply mix the pill in their food, checking after you’ve fed it to the cat to make sure they have swallowed it.
To directly pill, secure your pet and gently tilt their head up. Open their mouth and place the pill at the back of their tongue. Massage their throat until they swallow. You may need the help of a second person and a blanket or towel to keep the cat in place.
Always reward your cat with treats to create a positive experience, even if they may not like it.
For Liquids
Just like pills, the most important tip for giving liquid mediction is to remain calm and be prepared. Make sure you have all the supplies you need before you begin.
Some liquid medications can be put in small amount of food just like pills. Simply mix the liquid in the food, checking after to make sure that the cat has eaten the food with the liquid medication
To directly give the liquid, secure your pet and gently tilt their head up. Place the tip of the syringe behind their canines (fangs) and slowly give the liquid. You may need the help of a second person and a blanket or towel to keep the cat in place.
When it comes to liquids, make sure you allow time for your pet to swallow the medication and breathe. Then you can try to create a positive experience by offering treats.
